CBSE Class 9 Maths Marks Distribution Chapter-wise 2023
CBSE provides unit-wise marks distribution only. If you go through the syllabus document, you will find that there are six units this year and CBSE has provided marks distribution for each unit separately.
- Number Systems will carry 10 marks. The chapter Real Numbers is part of the unit number systems. If you check the CBSE class 9 maths syllabus 2022-23 PDF file, you will get to know that some topics are revised this year.
- Algebra has the second highest weightage. It has two chapters polynomials and linear equations. The total weightage to Algebra is 20 marks.
- Coordinate Geometry is a small unit with only one chapter. It bears only 4 marks.
- Geometry is the highest weightage in class 9 Maths syllabus 2022-23. Overall 27 marks are allotted to this unit because it has 5 chapters.
- Mensuration covers Areas, Surface Areas and Volumes only. This unit is revised and reduced drastically. Total of 13 mark questions will come from this unit.
- The last unit Statistics and Probability has only one chapter left. It is Statistics. The other chapter Probability is fully deleted.
UNIT I: NUMBER SYSTEMS

- Review of representation of natural numbers, integers and rational numbers on the number line. Rational numbers as recurring/ terminating decimals. Operations on real numbers.
- Examples of non-recurring/non-terminating decimals. Existence of non-rational numbers (irrational numbers) such as {tex}\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{3}{/tex} and their representation on the number line. Explaining that every real number is represented by a unique point on the number line and conversely, viz. every point on the number line represents a unique real number.
- Definition of nth root of a real number.
- Rationalization (with precise meaning) of real numbers of the type {tex}\frac{1}{a+b \sqrt{x}}{/tex} and {tex}\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}+\sqrt{y}}{/tex} (and their combinations) where x and y are natural number and a and b are integers.
- Recall of laws of exponents with integral powers. Rational exponents with positive real bases (to be done by particular cases, allowing learner to arrive at the general laws.)
UNIT II: ALGEBRA
POLYNOMIALS (26) Periods

Recall of algebraic expressions and identities. Verification of identities:
(x + y + z)2 = x2 + y2 + z2 + 2xy + 2yz + 2zx
(x {tex}\pm{/tex} y)3 = x3 {tex}\pm{/tex} y3 {tex}\pm{/tex} 3xy(x {tex}\pm{/tex} y)
x3 {tex}\pm{/tex} y3 = (x {tex}\pm{/tex} y)(x2 {tex}\pm{/tex} xy + y2
x3 + y3 + z3 – 3xyz = (x + y + z)(x2 + y2 + z2 – xy – yz – zx) and their use in factorization of polynomials.LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES (16) Periods
Recall of linear equations in one variable. Introduction to the equation in two variables. Focus on linear equations of the type ax + by + c = 0. - Remembering and Understanding – 43 Marks
- Applying – 19 Marks
- Analysing, Evaluating and Creating – 18 Marks
As this typology is based on Bloom’s taxonomy, we can clearly conclude that around 50% of questions will be easy and direct questions based on the formula. The next 25% will be of moderate difficulty level and the last 25% will need a bit higher thinking level.
The student will get 3 hours to solve this 80 marks question paper.
S.No | Typology of Questions | Total Marks | % Weightage (approx) |
